Front Range
Current Peaks listed for the Front Range
The Front Range is located in the north-central portion of the state. It is so named because it is the first mountain range seen when approaching from the eastern Great Plains. In the geologic past the Front Range area contained ancient mountain ranges, beaches, deserts, and possibly oceans. Evidence of these varied landscapes is widespread. As storms cross the range from west to east the mountains often diffuse the systems, causing milder weather for the high plains at the range’s feet. The Front Range is also geographically the most populated region of Colorado, from Pueblo north to the Wyoming border. As a result, the mountains of the Front Range are readily accessible to large numbers of climbers and hikers, causing the well-known peaks of the range to become quite crowed during climbing season. However, there are still many “out of the way” peaks that see less climbing use and providing a means of getting away while traveling close to home. |
